I AM IRON MAN 2

Posted: September 20th, 2010

Iron man 2 is coming out on Blu-Ray! I don’t know about everyone else but I was kind of disappointed with this one in comparison to the first one; it lacked the believability and likability of the first installment. Really Stark? You found a new element hidden in your dad’s amusement park map, and you made it using pipes and lasers? Very cheesy. And Mickey Rourke isn’t as great as people hype him up to be… he basically has little scraps of dialogue in which he throws on a stereotypical Russian bad guy voice. Still, it’s comic book fun, that will no doubt be spectacular on Blu-Ray.

Lost in Blu-Ray

Kind of an unspectacular release line-up this week at first glance…though looking more closely there are some gems in here. The main thing that is tempting this week is the complete collection of LOST. I was a huge fan of this show, and despite a massively anti-climactic conclusion, I’d relive this magical island tour in high def gladly. I suppose the Simpsons Season 13 would probably be good, though I stopped watching that show a long time ago. Oh, and there’s the classic 80′s flick Time Bandits!

Something is Rotten in the State of Lucasarts…

STAR WARS IS FINALLY GOING TO BE OUT ON BLU-RAY! And of course George Lucas is messing up again. Instead of releasing the iconic versions that everyone from my generation grew up knowing and loving, he’s putting out the horrible, horrible, horrible remade ones from 1997. If you havent seen these, the added and edited scenes will make you cringe. By the time i got to Return of The Jedi, I actually stood up and walked over to my DVD player to turn it off in disgust. Can’t wait to see the treatment he gives to the Indiana Jones collection.

In other Blu-Ray release news, this weeks pics were kind of weak, apart from complete seasons of Dexter, and of course, Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet (He’s directing the upcoming Marvel film Thor, by the way, which instantly makes it more appealing to me). If you haven’t seen the latter, it is by far the best adaptation of Shakespeare I’ve ever seen…I highly recommend it

Blu-Ray goes 100GB

Posted: August 4th, 2010

Buzz around the interwebs these days is that we can see an increase in Blu-Ray capacity very soon; the current 25GB single layer and 50 GB double layer will be beefed up to provide 100GB. That’s a lot of Blu-Ray goodness to cram onto one disc! Check out the following link…

Gone Fishin’

Posted: May 20th, 2010

gone-fishinHey all,

Pardon my absence from the blog the past week or so. I’m heading off to Europe at the end of the week, so I’ll be gone for 4 weeks! Exciting (maybe a bit too exciting with the flooding, volcanoes, riots and airplane strikes).

See you in a few weeks!

DVD2Blu and “Indy, where are you?”

DVD2Blu

I just found out about Warner Brother’s  DVD to Blu-Ray conversion program on the Facebook Blu-Ray forum, and I must say, I’m pretty darn stoked. There are so many movies in my DVD collection that I love, but would be somewhat reluctant to re-buy in Blu-Ray…because really, who wants to pay twice for a movie? Anyways, a big kudos to the movie industry and the Facebook group for turning my attention to this program.  In other news…

Indy

One thing that surprised me this past weekend was the conversation that I had with a guy at HMV…

Me – “Hey, do you have the Indiana Jones collection on Blu-Ray”

HMV guy – “Let me just check on my computer …{tap tap tap taptapatapatpa tap tap taptaptap tap}… nope, just the new one, Temple of alien something something.”

Me – “OMFG. WTF. ROFLcopters.”

Really? No Indiana Jones collection? Some of the most quintessential action movies of my childhood, and I’m forced to watch them on my Dad’s VHS. Unacceptable.  Amazon is waiting as impatiently as I am I guess, because they’ve put up a page with no release dates or even an official cover art rendering.
No Star Wars either for that matter. Why is George Lucas such a douche sometimes? Does he think that by holding out he’s going to create more hype? That only works to a degree, and then after a while you’re going to piss people off and become irrelevant.

New on Blu-Ray this Week – May 4th, 2010

This week’s new selections are…interesting. But there are a few gems to be found among the stones. No drawing today, because I’m at home sick with a cold :(

Saving Private Ryan (1998) – A great WW2 movie. Can’t wait to see this on Blu-Ray.

Doctor Zhivago (1965) – I know I’ve berated “classic” cinema in the past, but I admit that this one is actually quite good.

Elektra: The Director’s Cut (2005) – A spinoff from Daredevil (a box office bomb, but I found it quite good wow, I just watched it again for the first time in years…horrible, horrible, horrible). I’m sure it’s terrible, but Jeniffer Garner kicking ass in a skimpy outfit…yes please.

Escape from L.A. (1996)- Kurt Russel as Snake Pilssken: BAD ASS. A cheesy but fun film.

K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) – A surprisingly bad movie considering the premise and acting talent behind it. Harrison Ford’s accent is atrocious.

Hamlet (2009) – I’ve seen a few renditions of Hamlet…it’s one of my favourite stories of all time. This one has received a lot of critical acclaim, though from what I’ve seen of David Tennant, I’m not a fan.

The Notebook (2004) – Girls love this movie….absolutely love it. And as much as it hurts my masculinity to say it…it’s actually pretty good.

Dirty Dancing (1987) – Speaking of things girls love…

Celine: Through the Eyes of the World (2010) –  …oh c’mon…

Michael Bolton: Live at Royal Albert Hall (2010) – …you’re killing me here…

Barbra Streisand: One Night Only something something (2010) – …C’MON!!!

Chickenfoot: Get Your Buzz On (2010) – WTF?

Toothfairy (2009) – Can you hear that? It’s the sounds of the Rock’s career dying…

The Dukes (2009), Leap Year (2010), Preachers Kid (2010), Nine (2009)

Sidenotes: Sony’s Awesome New Bravia and BRDC on Facebook

Posted: April 26th, 2010

New Sony NX800Sony’s new NX series of HD LED TV‘s is freaking gorgeous…

Some people say that Son’y's TV’s are overly expenisve and not that great. I dunno…I think I’d for out for one of these beauties. I’ve enjoyed my Bravia, and I’ve recently purchased a Harmon Kardon receiver to enhance the Blu-Ray experience even further (though I still need some quality speakers for surround sound etc.), but it might be time to upgrade to something a bit nicer and shinier in the visuals as well…

In other news, BRDC is now on Facebook! If you enjoy the blog, please feel free to friend me! I’d love to hear some feedback on my blog so far.  My posts are a bit more brief compared to some of the other blogs out there, but I’m doing my best to tell it how I see it :)

Movie Review: Moon

moon-blu-ray

Quick Synopsis: Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is only fourteen days away from completing a three year mission on the dark side of the moon, where he has been mining energy for a big corporation. His time a world away from his wife and child has been spent in complete isolation, apart from a robotic helper named GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey). As his homeward journey approaches, Sam starts to notice something’s wrong, and that his employer is hiding something that they don’t want Sam to know about…
